“Drawing Revealed” Exhibition at the Garrison Art Center, which includes the film “Artists in Conversation” – White Hall Productions

“Opening a Window on the Creative Mind”—Benjamin Genocchio

“Ula Einstein draws with thread, fire, and fine wire, weaving delicate, minimal patterns of her own devising onto sheets of drawing paper.”

…Closer inspection reveals a greater formal diversity, with the practice of drawing explored from many points of view…

The modern enthusiasm for drawing is not entirely new, for in the 16th century there was a lively trade in drawings, not only among artists, who collected drawings by other artists, but also among wealthy patrons. Drawings by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo sold for tremendous sums — those of the Sistine Chapel were especially prized…

We tend to value drawings for their immediacy and freshness, perceiving them to be a more authentic, unadulterated impression of the artist’s original creative vision. In them, we believe we can discern the purest manifestation of the mysteries of artistic inspiration and apprehend a creative idea in its essential traits.

Restoring the centrality of beauty in art may signal more than visual relief from the tawdriness of today’s art. It would also be a confident assertion that the future we seek is connected to our desire for beauty and to an appreciation of how beauty can help lead us to a more perfect tomorrow.”

Perfectionism is not a Standard – Perfectionism is an Obstacle!

Perfectionism, that sneaky bugger, chips away at our ideas. It insists we aren’t ready yet, and asks who are you to do that? Perfectionism has no room for experimenting, playing, or process; it’s too busy evaluating the result and checking if everything is “just-so.”

It’s the voice that stops us in our tracks. Don’t be fooled. This is the voice of No, instead of GO…

The video series for Express It Forward could have been delayed for months for any number of reasons. Douglas Turner and I had never collaborated before. Starting from scratch: Did we have the right equipment? What about the inadequate lighting in the studio? Then there’s the part about a bad hair day…

You have to have space in you to be a fool. (A common dread in every culture). I have two years experience in performing stand-up comedy; so what could be more scary? Beginning – starting something new, can bring it all up…and I said….next!

Days after the idea was borne to produce videos on creativity, process and imagination, Douglas and I Just Went For It. AND we’re learning as we go, and working on the lighting ! (www.youtube.com/TheUlaEinstein)

Being in process is very humbling. Focus on the Voice of Inspiration. Where does perfectionism arise in you? Let us know what you do about it…

Recently, I was watching an interview with Arianna Huffington on PBS (I love her accent, intelligence and gumption) speaking about her life’s trajectory. Talking about her own experiences with ongoing doubts she said “Doubt is the roommate living in my head.”

You know… the voice that barrages you with second guessing, questioning your intuition – convincing thoughts of ineptitude, lousy ideas, bad timing – combatants that takes up lodging in us. Essentially it’s the voice that keeps us from moving forward - Arianna went on to say that over time she developed the practice of not paying these destructive voices any mind, and instead decided to focus on what she wanted to do, and believe in herself!

So! Question that persistent, belligerent madness, and see it for what it is! Here’s the kicker – rarely, if it at all- are those thoughts True. It becomes a voice we give authority to which only undermines us.

Away with it! When oppositional forces surface, mostly having nothing to do with constructive criticism, I look up, nod and say “thank you for sharing” Then I choose something else. Listen to the voice of love! Discern! To be clear about what is going on will enable action taking. Clarity is the new sexy! Write and let us know what you do…
